R22 Refrigerant Phase Out Information

R-22 is an older HCFC refrigerant that is often used in air conditioning systems. HCFC’s are harmful to the environment and have been phased out to protect the Earth’s ozone layer. If your air conditioning system is over 15 years old, it is likely that you have an R-22 type system. This is usually indicated on the info tag on the AC condenser unit. R-22 type systems have been phased out in 2020 and will no longer be produced or imported in the United States. The most common alternative to R-22 is R-410A, a non-ozone depleting refrigerant blend.

What this means to our customers who have R-22 type systems:

We recommend that all AC systems are serviced every year to improve efficiency, performance and lifespan. It is common for older AC systems to develop refrigerant leaks and other problems that cause noticeable cooling performance issues. When this happens, a certified AC technician can ‘re-charge’ the system with new refrigerant. Due to the R-22 phase out, and therefore limited supply, this service will entail higher costs than previous years, while supplies last. Depending on the age of your system, it may be wise to invest in a new high-efficiency R-410A type system as opposed to maintaining the old system.
